The list includes 55 international artists, and features a few art history heavy weights, including Joseph Beuys, Louise Bourgeois, Henri Matisse, and Bruce Nauman. Otherwise, it’s dominated by contemporary art stars like Francis Alÿs, Rineke Dijkstra, Slavs and Tatars, and Cindy Sherman, among others. Pawel Althamer (whose first U.S. museum show is currently on view at the New Museum) and Ragnar Kjartansson are among 35 artists who will produce specially commissioned projects and public programming for the biennial.
