Hermitage White Nights Gala Banquet

Every year, on a warm evening in June, the State Hermitage Museum opens its doors to friends and patrons of the arts for an unforgettable evening of art, music, dancing and food in an unparalleled setting. Now in its 9th year, the White Nights Gala Banquet is an opportunity to see the Hermitage not just in its guise of museum, but in the full pageantry of a courtly palace. This evening brings international attention to the Museum, which is approaching its 250th anniversary in 2014, and its world-renowned collections. At the same time, the Gala also highlights and raises support for the future of the Museum, especially the ongoing renovation and restoration of the General Staff Building, which will house 20th and 21st century art. The Patrons’ Committee includes Alexei Kudrin, Valentina Matvienko and Prince Dmitri Romanov who attends the Gala Banquet every year, together with his wife.

Program for the 2012 White Nights Banquet Gala:

Beginning at 7 pm, guests will enter by the Grand Nikolaevsky Staircase of the Winter Palace, known for its famous sculpted Atlantes. The festivities will commence with a cocktail reception in the stunning Rafael Loggia. Next, guests will procede to the St. George the Great Throne Room to hear a symphonic performance of Tchaikovsky’s 1812 Overture. After sitting down to a sumptuous five-course dinner in the stunning Jordan Gallery, guests will then be invited to a private viewing of the main halls of the Winter Palace, including the chance to see masterpieces from the collection, as well as special exhibitions, such as the visiting installation by contemporary artist/architect Santiago Calatrava “The Quest for Movement.” This will be followed by a ball in the grand Napoleonic style in the Heraldry Hall, to commemorate the 200th anniversary of Russia’s victory against Napoleon. At the stroke of midnight guests will hear the unique melodic chime of the famous Peacock Clock, a mechanical masterpiece that is only used on very special occasions, and will be offered a farewell toast in the newly renovated Hanging Garden of Catherine the Great.
